Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens Dance the Macabre, Dance of Death or Dance of the Cortchul was written in the mid 1400's as and artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability that we shall all, one day meet death. This Memento mori was created at a time of great illness, war, poverty and death throughout Europe. It was a time when people, no matter their social standing , found themselves faced with the prospects of having family, friends and their own lives taken by the grim reaper or culturally appropriate death spirit, with little or no warning. Whole families and villages could be wiped out. Today we have made huge advances in medicine, yet we still are vulnerable to disease and our own mortality.
