How might we ride out the Christmas and other religious holiday overload when we do not believe that god exists? Mairead Ashcroft 24/12/16

Image
Christmas/Christian, Chanakuh/Jewish, Milad un Nabi/Muslim, Yule and Litha/Wicca, Dhanu Guru Gobind Singh Birthday and Bodi Day/ Buddhist (no gods) are a series of religious festivals that span the month of early December into the early days of the new year in January. Each is held in reverence and celebrates the lives or teachings of a prophet or lesson that has been passed down by culturally appropriate means through generations. This could be through the written or spoken words of ancestors, angles, the voice of God or gods or other divine entities. In my modern world, I unfortunately witness the main prophet of the holiday season in now the monetary profit of commercialism.
I was raised in a Catholic family and practice Christmas rituals every year but I don't actually remember any of them being about helping or empathizing with others. I have taken four of the seven Holy Sacraments which I was lead to believe were so vital to me as a human. I once believed that in order to li…

I have noticed that it is almost impossible to live through one single day without coming across an inference about improving our physical health. This is great because we who follow western diets, often sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy social traditions seem to be carrying more body fat than we ever have before.
Articles about the development of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity related disease report epidemic rates of childhood adolescent and adult physical health issues but not the possible underlying mental health issues. It is wonderful to exercise and care about the food that we consume but as a holistic mental health therapist, I believe that  we might only be engaging in superficial changes. In order to make any real changes in our lives we may need a whole person approach, body, mind and spirit. There are no miracle cures or magic potions that will offer you better health. We humans, like all organic beings, have vulnerabilities and so to do our mind. Just like joi…

Lord have mercy

I feel that my hard work has been worth the nightmares (nearly). It saddens me to think that the teachings shared by Jesus Christ the man, Buddha, Martin Luther King and other great compassionate humans seem to have been thrown to the wayside when it comes to the establishment of organised religion and what is the best for their followers. My hope is to see the teachings of mercy and compassion return to the world in all religions, races and creeds. I hope that the protection of our most precious gifts, our children, will be in the forefront of the minds of all. Let the legacy we leave to future generations be love, kindness, understanding and a beautiful and healthy environment. For those who may be justifiably angry at the abuses suffered as a child, I can only encourage you to face your own truth, stay strong b…

The benifits of attending to life issues through counselling: dispite not being able to offer a medicare rebate. Mairead Ashcroft 4/12/16

Image
As a qualified mental health practitioner I hold a bachelor in counselling and diploma in Art therapy. Although I have been working in the industry for a number of years now and have experience with clients who are working towards healing from complex illnesses and life issues, I am unable to offer my clients a medicare rebate.  According to information on the Australian Government, Department to Health and Ageing, www.health.gov.au
"Medicare rebates are available to patients for selected mental health services provided by general practitioners (GPs), psychiatrists, psychologists (clinical and registered) and eligible social workers and occupational therapists...... The Better Access initiative is available to patients with an assessed mental disorder who would benefit from a structured approach to the management of their treatment needs......... Provision exists for patients to access up to an additional six services individual allied mental health services under exceptional cir…

Exposure Therapy: Today is a day that I have been both dreading and deeply longing for. This afternoon I will enter the old monastery which housed my sexual abuser all those years ago, the place where my childhood innocence was cut short. My hope is to draw a line at the gate and put this ordeal back into my past where it belongs. I am not expecting miracles to occur but from past experience, I know that facing childhood fears from an adult perspective can be very healing. Thank You, John, for your years of support, care and love. It has been you who kept me strong. I love you. Mairead xxx

This will be me on one month's time, lazing in the warmth of Darwin in the wet season. I plan to stare at the night sky and watch the sheet lightning flash across to vastness of the heavens. I will have many more holidays now that all 7 children are finished school and able to care for themselves, particularly after reading this article. It has been 15 years since my last trip with my husband and I am looking forward to it immensely.
